VISAŽ Phone Scam Alert

VISAŽ Phone Scam Alert: July 22, 2008

We have been made aware of a telephone scam that recently targeted Credit Unions and is circulating throughout the country. Targeted Credit Union members are receiving an automated message claiming that their Credit Union has suspended their VISAŽ card and instructing them to call an 800 number to reactivate the card. When the consumer calls the number, they are prompted to dial in their account number, expiration date and PIN number. They are then instructed to press '1' to reactivate the card. Duplicate cards are being created in Spain and used to withdraw cash or make purchases. Please do not call the phone number provided or provide any specific member information to this request. If you are a member and feel you have been a victim of this attack, please contact Member Support immediately.

Report a Suspicious Email
If you think you've received a phishing e-mail message, do not respond to it or click on any links. Report the suspicious e-mail immediately to us by contacting Member Support. Additionally, do not call a phone number as directed in the email and provide any personal information.

Awareness is Your Best Defense

  • Never give or send sensitive information such as passwords, credit card numbers, social security numbers, secret words, or PINs in an email or submit it through a Web site, automated phone number or through text messaging
  • Never click directly on links in an email that requests sensitive information, even if you recognize and trust the address. These links can redirect you to a fake (though very real looking) Web site.
  • Never provide personal or account information in response to any unsolicited request (by email or by phone)
  • Beware of any unsolicited email that threatens to close or suspend your account(s) or online account access
  • Beware of any unsolicited email that requests you provide personal account information that your credit union should already know
  • Visit the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to learn more about how to identify and avoid information security threats and receive news and alerts, consumer protection and anti-trust information.
